Thoughts on abortion?

I thought this could be an interesting discussion.

So what are your thoughts when it comes to the topic of abortion? Frankly, I have heard many things from both sides of the issue, and at times both points of view can seem sound.

On the one hand, I was always taught that life begins at conception, not after the baby is born, therefore abortion is murder. But on the other hand, I once heard someone say that if a child is conceived though a casual affair and isn't really wanted, then it is better to get rid of the baby rather than have it grow up unwanted in an orphanage or to be abused in a terrible home where it isn't wanted and cause problems for other people later in life.

Personally... I think that if people don't want a baby, they should either just not have sex (although that is too much to ask in some cases) or just have some sort of protection. (Such as birth control or condoms, perhaps.)

I mean, when there comes a possibility of bringing a new, innocent life into the picture, can you really afford to be so careless about sex?

In some ways... I dunno, maybe I would feel differently if I had ever been pregnant, or if I ever had a child I didn't want. I have done neither, so I don't really know what I would do or how I would feel under those circumstances. But the way I feel right now, I think abortion can sometimes be a lazy way out. "Oh I had my fun sex but I don't want the baby, I'll just have it plucked out like an ingrown toenail." That's what it seems to be, in some cases at least.

Although if the baby is seriously malformed or dying, or posing a serious threat to the mother's life in some way, then I can see abortion as being more of a necessary option.

But anyway, what are you thoughts on abortion in general? Discuss.

Just to use myself as an example here of what I’d do, I’d say if I had sex, didn’t want the kid, I’d do it anyway because no matter how gung-ho I may be about the army some day or the marines, it’s killing a baby. If I was stupid enough to do unprotected sex or chose the wrong condoms or pills, then it’s my responsibility and I’ll deal with it. I’d find some way to make it work.

And then the other scenario… what if the woman the gets pregnant isn’t financially stable and she just can’t have the baby? Honestly… I still wouldn’t kill the kid. It’s one thing to go all guns blazing, but if there’s something growing inside you then it’s like removing yourself of a good thing.

Now, I respect women who had abortions, especially if they couldn’t deal with the kid. Now, if some idiot like Sarah Silverman comes on to TV and cheerfully says, “I’ve had 3 abortions!” it’s like me admitting, “I slit the throat of my kids.” Any mother who does it and has a conscious about it in some way I like and understand.

I guess it’s really the situation, though. More people are losing their virginity and getting pregnant way too early. And honestly, knowing the idiots I go to school with, they’ll end up like Silverman.

I am against abortion indefinately, however I do accept that there are instances when it may be considered acceptable. The mothers life may be in danger, and therefore getting rid of the embryo or foetus would be necessary to prevent her from dying.

Then there is the problem of rape. The mother would be physically and emotionally traumatized, making it impossible to raise that particular child, due to the fact that it was conceived during a rape. However in this instance I feel that opting for adoption is better than terminating a pregnancy, and basically killing a defenseless child.

Now I'm not the most religious person in the world, but at the end of the day this is a major sin. That is why the majority of abortions here in Ireland are illegal.

Well I don't think It's muder in any way, the only thing that defines muder is society. Take for instance, a soldier, when they goto war and kill a man, multiple men, and come home we dont consider them murders. We consider them heroes.

If a guy like Jack the ripper comes along and kills 11 people, then he is a psychopathic killer, and what do we do, we hunt them down an give them the needle. So is that in turn murder.

I think we should just forget everthing society has ever told you, and whatever religion has told you, and do what you think is right

I am very split on the issue of abortion. On one hand it would be a breach of our amendment rights, it is within a persons personal decision to choose to abort. Although some believe that life starts at conception it is scientific fact that a embryo can't survive outside of the womb for the first two trimesters. there for it is possible to say that the baby isn't truly alive until that point were it can live with out the womb..

however... I personally strongly disagree with abortion. Most often it is used as an easy way out for people to get rid of their problems with no consequences. They mess up and have sex with out protection and they just go and abort. It seems wrong on so many levels they don't get punished and a possibility is lost. There are so many people who can't have kids it's wrong for those who can to waste it in such away. that being said there are certain times abortion is the right course or at least acceptable. If the mother is at risk or if the baby will defiantly not survive after birth then it is defiantly a good descision. Also if the girl was raped it is perfectly understandable that they would abort. that child would have such a hard life and every time the women looked at the kid they would be reminded of that event.

So I think Abortion should be legal but i disagree with it and would never ask someone to do it.
